kettalgiro
Kettal Giro, drawn by Vincent Van Duysen in 2021, builds its seats from rope that is sewn together until it becomes the shape of the piece. The rope is recycled polypropylene, and the sofas stand on bases of solid teak. It is teak patio furniture with a soft, stitched surface where most outdoor seating has slats or an open frame.

sewn from rope
Van Duysen names the Orkney chair as his main reference, a vernacular piece whose back was made of real rope. Giro keeps the stitched construction and swaps the old fiber for recycled polypropylene, which can be produced in a factory and left outside all year. His stated aim was respect for the craft tradition, carried out with the know-how Kettal already has.
The seating runs from a garden chair with armrests and a folding chair with armrests to a fabric armchair, sofas in two and three seat lengths, and a sectional garden sofa. The two seater is offered with the arm on the right, on the left or with none, which lets several of them line up in a row. Every sofa rests on a teak base.
The tables sit low and wide. There is a low round coffee table in two sizes and an oval coffee table, both in teak with ceramic tops, plus a round cement coffee table in two sizes and a rectangular teak and ceramic table, also in two sizes. Ceramic and cement do not fade in sun, which suits a table that stays out all summer.
Polypropylene rope does not rot and dries quickly after a shower. The teak weathers to gray unless it is oiled once or twice a season. As a Kettal Giro set grows from one chair to a full lounge, the palette stays short: rope, wood, clay. That restraint suits a covered city terrace as well as a lawn by the water.
Rope stitched into a seat, the Orkney way.
